Vinyl Grading System
Meaning of the grading codes that state the condition of a record and its cover in terms of pre-owned or used vinyl records.
CODE: M (Mint)
* The record is in brand new condition, absolutely perfect. Usually a sealed record.
* Cover and extra documents like lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.
CODE: NM (Near Mint)
* The vinyl looks glossy and has only been played a few times. There are no marks on the vinyl and the whole package is complete.
* The cover looks close to perfect with only minor signs of wear.
CODE: EX (Excellent)
* The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality.
* The cover and packaging might have slight wear but excellent aspect overall.
CODE: VG+ (Very Good +)
* The record has been played a few times but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, no wear, despite occasional light marks.
* Cover shows some minor imperfection like normal wear and tear, price tag, creasing, etc. Cover can also be in mint condition but there is, for example, a promo copy stamp or cut in the corner.
CODE: VG (Very Good)
* VG records have more obvious flaws than VG+ or NM records. They lack most of the original gloss found on factory-fresh records. Groove wear is evident on sight, as are light scratches. When played, a VG record has surface noise, and some scratches may be audible, especially in soft passages and during a song’s intro and ending. But the noise will not overpower the music otherwise
* Cover suffers from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, and so forth.
CODE: G (Good)
* The record has been played so much that the sound quality has been noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.
* The cover and contents can be torn, stained and/or defaced, there also can be some writing on it.
CODE: P (Poor) or F (Fair)
* Poor and fair records are cracked, impossibly warped, or skip and/or repeat when an attempt is made to play them.
* The cover is so heavily damaged.
